About the City

Essen is a city in the center of the Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia. The county town within the governmental district of Düsseldorf is one of the key cities of the country and, with approximately 580,000 inhabitants one of the largest German cities.
Today the Essen cathedral and the oldest form of the Madonna of the Christian West plays tribute to its ecclesiastical history. The UNESCO World Cultural Heritage “Zeche Zollverein” and the whole area of Coal mining and refining is only one achievement Essen made over its lifespan. After the massive decline of heavy industry in the past four decades, Essen has developed a strong service sector. The city is home to major corporations and continues to be a major industrial city in the Rhine Ruhr area.

About economy

Essen is the seat of some of the big German groups: Beside the second largest industrial enterprise of Germany RWE AG and its subsidiary power RWE and Rhine Ruhr RWE, Aldi north, STEAG, the Schenker AG, Eon-Ruhr gas as well as, since 2010, the Thyssen group calls Düsseldorf home. One of the biggest press groups of Germany, the WAZ group, has its seat in Essen. The shoe discounter Deichmann is resident in Essen-Borbeck. Moreover, another industrial company of the mechanical engineering branch in the location Essen has settled with the company Voith Turbo Hochelastische Kupplungen GmbH & Co. KG during the last years.

What Essen is known for

Here: Zeche Zollverein

The Zollverein coal mine was active from 1847 to 1986. It is now an industrial monument. Together with the immediately adjacent Zollverein XII and 1/2/8 are the locations of the mine since 2001, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Zollverein is the anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
The main premises of the Zeche Zollverein with the equipment bay 12 and bay 1/2/8 is located in the northeastern district of Essen Katernberg. It is located between the streets Arendahls Wiese, Fritz Schupp-Allee, Gelsenkirchen strasse and Hallo strasse. The main entrance with the famous view from the front of the double-head frame is fixed to the Gelsenkirchen street. Arendahls between adjacent meadow, Cologne-Minden Road and Großwesterkamp is the Zollverein. The three plants are now generally perceived as an ensemble of world heritage. The system tray 3/7/10 is about one kilometer away to the east of the road at the park in the district Schonnebeck craftsmen. The plant is located about two shaft 4/5/11 kilometers north from the main site on the street in the district Katernberger Katernberg.
The system slot 6 / 9 was about one kilometer south of the main campus between Gelsenkirchen road and street Hello.
